  • Allen Iverson is six feet tall, not five foot ten. so his pound-for-pound score should be 4.67. Still topping the chart though. I like the concept, I would love to see the meta-statistics, I'd recommend just using Player Efficiency Rating, it's the best raw statistical metric we have in basketball to weight player contribution on the court.

  • Really bad video - all those stats are nonsense. I actuallly play basketball - so you look at the guy, look at his skill set (spend, quickness, range, accuracy, passing ability, dribbling ability (so he doesn't get the ball stolen) - and you find that all these guys are great and on any one day some will be better than others. But if you have to pick you always pick the tallest if every thing else is equal because height is an advantage in both offense and defense. The reason Mugsy Bowes career is so out of world unbelievable is that he was only 5'3 but he was able to have a 14 year career. But if you look at the overall players around or under 6 feet, yes you would pick Iverson - but you don't need all those stats - just look at his skill set and how much he produced - it is easy to see Iverson is the most valuable and overall the guy you would want on your team. But understand one important thing. Almost all the players shoot between 45 and 55%. The reason there are stars and roll players is that some guy thrive under pressure and those are the guys you want to have the ball. So even if the star shoots and misses (which they ALL DO 1/2 of the time) the roll players give the ball back to the star - so the stars take many more shots than the roll players. The sad part of basketball is that no player was able to break the 60% scoring average. So they all miss basically 1/2 of their shots - no matter what happens Jordan, Bird, Jordan, Roberston, West, Kobe, you pick kthe guy and they all shot between 44 and 45 percent. . Basketball players are under pressure because of the 25 second clock to shoot the ball and take shots that are being pressured by defense. If there was no 25 second clock the ball would be passed around more and the guy who got free (from picks and screens and just getting away from their defender that FREE guy would eventully have the ball passedto him and he would have an open shot and the scoring would be closer to 80%.

  • You completely misunderstand what pound for pound means... and it wasn’t coined by fans. It was created by a boxing writer in the late 20th century who asked the question: if you take size out of the equation, who is the best? Or, if you make everyone the same size, who would be the greatest? It doesn’t punish the bigger guys anymore than it favours smaller guys. His question, as it pertained to boxing... if you took a lightweight and a heavyweight, and made them the same height and weight, who would win? Simple as that.

  • This is kinda complicated. AI's highest scoring year '01-'02 he avg 31.4 ppg, but he also avg 27.8 FGA. Same year Shaq was 2nd in the league in scoring at 27.2 ppg with only 18.3 FGA (2/3 of AI's attempts). However, 2nd leading scorer on the Sixers that year was 34 yr old Derrick Coleman (at a time when 34 yr old was ancient) with 15.1 ppg. 76ers needed AI taking all those shots. So, it's really hard to evaluate everything in a vacuum because there's so many factors that went into these players accumulating these stats. Shaq didn't get the FGA for example, because he had Kobe & a better supporting cast. Edit: Fwiw, MJ's career high in FGA was '86-'87 where he also averaged 27.8 FGA that year. He averaged 37.1 ppg that year.

  • The pound-for-pound thinking is as old as those bronze age guys that wrote down David vs. Goliath. 😁 And of course it's valuable. You said it yourself - the sheer number of bigger-than-average guys alone proves that they have an (ominous) advantage at this sport, or else the average height wouldn't be 6''6'. It's just the fact that being small makes being dominant more impressive.
